WASHINGTON - Reacting to sharp criticism from Congress and the public, drug regulators are launching an extensive study to determine whether antidepressants increase suicidal behavior in adults.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will re-examine data from clinical trials involving 40,000 patients. This comes after a recent analysis of pediatric studies showed the drugs raised suicide risk for children and teens.

"In view of the recent evidence of the FDA's lax oversight, it is past the time for the agency to take their mission to ensure the safety of medications seriously," said Rep. Diana DeGette, a Denver Democrat. She sits on the House Oversight and Investigations subcommittee.

DeGette calls for probe of alleged Army re-enlistment threat

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette today called for a congressional investigation into complaints that soldiers are being threatened with deployment to Iraq unless they re-enlist.

"They can't meet re-enlistment goals, so they're putting this hammer over their head, which is just wrong," said the Denver Democrat. "In the long term, the integrity of our military is going to suffer.
